Kyoto has been the imperial capital of Japan for more than one thousand years. It is one of the best preserved cities in Japan and the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto are listed by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

There are about 1600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines: among the most famous temple in Japan are Kiyomizu-dera on the slope of a mountain, Kinkaku-ji with its Golden Pavilion, Ginkaku-ji with the Silver Pavilion and Ryoan-ji, famous for its rock garden.
